Maureen Okam Achebe, Daughter of Chinua Achebe, Wins Prestigious Harvard Medical School Award

Maureen Okam Achebe, daughter of the celebrated novelist Chinua Achebe, has been honored with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) 2024 Faculty Development and Diversity Award. This prestigious award, recognizing exceptional contributions in clinical care, research, education, and community service, underscores Okam Achebe’s significant achievements in the medical field.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a leading academic medical center and premier teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, officially notified Okam Achebe of her accolade in a letter dated July 2. Her brother, Chidi Achebe, chairman of the African Integrated Development Enterprise Public Benefit Corporation (AIDE PBC), shared the exciting news publicly.

Maureen Okam Achebe’s impressive educational journey includes a medical degree from the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria, advanced training in hematology and medical oncology at Yale School of Medicine, and a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She currently serves as an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and director at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

In addition to her academic roles, Okam Achebe is a commissioner on the Lancet Non-Communicable Disease and Injuries (NCDI) Nigeria Poverty Commission. As an expert in sickle cell disease (SCD), she plays a crucial role in guiding policy development and interventions aimed at reducing the SCD burden in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

Her latest recognition by Harvard Medical School highlights not only her personal accomplishments but also her commitment to advancing medical research and improving healthcare outcomes in diverse communities.
