“Mathematics Remains Compulsory for All O’Level Students” — FG

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that Mathematics remains a compulsory subject for all students sitting for O’Level examinations.

This clarification was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by Boriowo Folashade, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education.

The announcement followed widespread confusion after an earlier statement last Tuesday suggested that students in the arts and humanities might no longer need a credit in Mathematics for university admission.

Boriowo explained that while tertiary institutions may now admit candidates into certain programmes where a credit pass in Mathematics or English is not mandatory, all students are still required to register and sit for both subjects during their O’Level examinations.

“All students must continue to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level examinations,” the statement read.

She clarified that the recent policy review only affects admission criteria, not the examination requirements, stressing that the reform aims to improve access to higher education without lowering academic standards.

“The adjustment affects only admission guidelines. It does not remove Mathematics or English Language as compulsory subjects to be taken at O’Level,” she stated.

The Ministry noted that the decision aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision for equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development, describing English and Mathematics as “vital tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning.”

Students, parents, and stakeholders were urged to rely solely on official communication channels for verified updates on education policies.

When asked whether the latest statement represented a reversal of the ministry’s earlier position, Boriowo responded:

“No, this is not a U-turn. It’s a clarification to streamline admission requirements and expand access to tertiary education.”
