Manhattan Judge Rules Trump Committed Fraud, Overinflated Net Worth, and Deceived Banks

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron ruled on Tuesday that former US President Donald Trump committed fraud over several years while amassing his real estate empire. The ruling, delivered in response to a civil lawsuit brought forth by New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, found that Trump and his company had engaged in deceptive practices, massively overvaluing assets, and exaggerating net worth in order to secure financing and deals.

Judge Engoron imposed punitive measures as a consequence of the fraud, including rescinding some of Trump’s business licenses, a move that could significantly impede his ability to conduct business in New York. Furthermore, an independent monitor will be appointed to oversee the operations of the Trump Organization.

Trump, who has consistently maintained his innocence, faced a substantial setback with this decision, as it contradicts his carefully cultivated image as a wealthy real estate magnate who transitioned into a political figure.

The ruling revealed that Trump, along with key executives, had repeatedly fabricated financial information on annual statements, which led to benefits such as favorable loan terms and reduced insurance premiums. Judge Engoron dismissed Trump’s assertion that a disclaimer on these financial statements absolved him of wrongdoing, stating in his 35-page ruling, “That is a fantasy world, not the real world.”

Notably, Manhattan prosecutors had considered pursuing a criminal case related to this conduct but ultimately declined to do so. Instead, Attorney General Letitia James initiated a civil lawsuit, seeking penalties that could disrupt Trump and his family’s business activities in the state.

While Judge Engoron’s ruling addresses the primary claim in James’ lawsuit, six additional claims remain pending. A non-jury trial is scheduled to commence on October 2, during which Engoron will deliberate on these claims and consider potential penalties.

Letitia James is pursuing $250 million in penalties and a ban on Trump conducting business in his home state of New York. The trial is anticipated to extend into December, as indicated by Judge Engoron.
