Man Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Defrauding American of $345,000
A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Chima Nkwocha, popularly known as “Young Billionaire,” to two years in prison for defrauding a United States citizen of $345,000.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed that Nkwocha was arrested in August 2024 and later arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on charges of impersonation and fraud. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to the EFCC, Nkwocha, using multiple aliases including Frank Nils, Frank Cobert, and Chettot, impersonated others via Gmail and Google Voice to defraud Linda Wheeler, an American citizen. The fraud involved using email addresses and communication channels to obtain the funds, which were transferred to a Zenith Bank account under Ginux Global Nigeria Limited, where Nkwocha was the sole signatory.
The court heard that during the investigation, several items were recovered from the convict, including a black Mercedes Benz ML 350, gold jewellery, $2,200 in cash, and over N90 million in the Zenith Bank account. Additional assets linked to the crime included a three-bedroom terrace duplex, a bungalow, two self-contained apartments, and a plot of land measuring 300 square meters. Two bank drafts worth N8 million and various electronic devices were also seized.
Justice Nwite, satisfied with the EFCC’s evidence, sentenced Nkwocha to two years imprisonment but allowed an option of a fine of N2 million. Furthermore, the court ordered the forfeiture of all the recovered assets and funds to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The EFCC emphasized that the sentence and asset forfeiture demonstrate the commission’s commitment to combating cybercrime and fraud in the country.
