Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Raping Underage Wife
A landmark verdict has emerged from a court in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where a man (identity withheld) has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and abduction of his underage wife, confirmed by the victim’s lawyer, Mian Safeer, on Monday.
Described as the first of its kind in the province, the decision was handed down by a court specializing in cases of gender-based violence in the north-western region of the country.
According to the lawyer, the victim, who was married through a spiritual ceremony and still resided with her parents, was abducted by the perpetrator and subjected to multiple days of captivity and sexual assault.
In addition to life imprisonment for rape and abduction, the court imposed a significant fine on the convicted individual.
The lawyer emphasized that this ruling marks a crucial milestone in the advancement of women’s rights in Pakistan, a country where incidents of violence against women remain a pervasive issue. Pakistan, with a population exceeding 240 million, grapples with patriarchal norms deeply ingrained in its cultural and societal fabric.
Marital rape was criminalized in Pakistan in 2021, with sporadic convictions reported since then. This latest case underscores the ongoing challenges in combating gender-based violence, particularly within the context of underage marriages, often arranged by guardians and deeply rooted in traditional practices.
