Man Convicted for Selling Stepson in Ritual Sacrifice
37-year-old Lovemore Sithole, a Zimbabwean national, has been convicted in Botswana for selling his six-year-old stepson for ritual purposes. Sithole is now facing the death penalty after reportedly receiving $15,000 USD (about 200,000 Botswana Pula) in exchange for the child.
The crime, which unfolded earlier this year, involved Sithole orchestrating the trafficking of his stepson to individuals allegedly connected to ritualistic killings. Authorities revealed that Sithole handed over the child after negotiating the deal. Tragically, the boy later went missing and was found dead, leaving a deep scar on his family and the wider community in both Botswana and Zimbabwe.
A month after the boy’s disappearance, Botswana authorities discovered human remains in an area associated with suspected ritual activities. DNA tests confirmed the remains were those of the missing child, solidifying Sithole’s role in the gruesome act. The discovery has devastated the child’s family and outraged the public, sparking calls for justice and severe punishment.
Public anger has been palpable, with citizens in both countries condemning the crime as barbaric and inhuman. The case has highlighted the ongoing issue of ritual killings in the region and raised alarm over the vulnerability of children to such atrocities.
Botswana authorities acted decisively, arresting Sithole and uncovering substantial evidence of his involvement in the crime. His conviction has reignited discussions on capital punishment in Botswana, where the death penalty remains a legal recourse for severe crimes.
