Makinde on 2027 Presidency: “I’ll Speak for Myself When the Time Comes”
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has addressed speculation surrounding his potential bid for the 2027 presidential election, stating that he will declare his intentions when he is ready.
Makinde made the remarks during a visit to Fashola Farm in Oyo Town on Friday, amid growing rumors about his plans to run for the presidency.
In response to the speculation, the governor emphasized that discussions about his political future are unnecessary at this time, adding that no one can push his agenda except himself.
“We didn’t host the PDP retreat because someone has a presidential ambition. No comment, nothing,” Makinde told reporters. “All I can say is, I’m old enough. If I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do. No speculation. Nobody can push my agenda; I will push my agenda when the time comes.”
Reflecting on his political journey, Makinde credited the people of Oyo State for his success, stating that his victory in the 2019 gubernatorial election was driven by the will of the people rather than the backing of a political godfather.
“Oyo State people made a decision in 2019. We didn’t have a godfather. Nobody sponsored me, and nobody gave me a dime. It was the people who decided to give an outsider a chance,” he said, recalling criticism he faced early in his political career.
Before becoming governor, Makinde noted, he had no prior experience in elected office, having failed twice in his bid for the Senate. “Experience in politics? None. Experience in governance? None. But I’ve done well for myself in business, and they [the people] decided to give me the opportunity,” he added.
Makinde also urged Nigerians to look beyond party lines and extend opportunities to capable leaders from other political affiliations, warning against the dangers of a one-party state.
The governor’s remarks come amid heightened interest in potential candidates for the 2027 presidency, with Makinde viewed by some as a strong contender within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, the governor made it clear that any announcements regarding his ambitions will come directly from him when the time is right.
