“Lt. Gen. Lagbaja Receiving Medical Treatment Abroad, No Leadership Vacuum” — DHQ
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), is currently receiving medical treatment abroad. The Army assures the public that his absence will not result in any leadership gap within the service.
In an official statement released on Saturday, Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that Lagbaja, who is also on annual leave, had put necessary measures in place to ensure smooth operations during his absence. Nwachukwu’s statement follows growing public concern regarding the COAS’s absence from recent high-profile military functions.
Addressing the speculations, Nwachukwu clarified, “There have been instances where unforeseen health issues kept service chiefs away for up to three months. However, this does not create confusion or a vacuum within the Nigerian Army’s leadership.”
Nwachukwu explained that prior to his leave, Lagbaja delegated his duties to Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalami Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), ensuring the continuation of all essential operations. He reassured the public that the army remains a highly organized institution, with clear procedures for handling leadership transitions.
The statement also debunked rumors suggesting instability within the army, asserting that all scheduled activities, including personnel postings, promotions, and training exercises, are proceeding as planned.
Nwachukwu urged the public to disregard unfounded rumors and reaffirmed the army’s readiness to maintain national security. “The Nigerian Army remains fully committed to defending the country, and the COAS’s temporary absence has not disrupted any operations,” he said.
The DHQ expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their continued prayers and support for Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, assuring the public that operations are in safe hands until his return.
