“Low Membership Registration of Igbos May Cost Peter Obi ADC Presidential Ticket” – Party Chair

A chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State has warned that low membership registration among supporters in the South-East could weaken the presidential ambition of Peter Obi ahead of the party’s primaries.

Don Norman Obinna, who leads the African Democratic Congress in Abia State, made the remark on Saturday in Umuahia during the inauguration of executive members of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (Coalition for the Protection of Democracy) across Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South local government areas.

Obinna urged party members and supporters of Obi to take part in the ongoing online e-registration exercise, noting that participation levels would play a decisive role in internal party contests.

He cautioned that enthusiasm alone would not translate into electoral success unless backed by strong numbers during the primaries. According to him, current registration figures indicate a disparity between states, with Abia recording about 400,000 registered members, while Adamawa State is approaching one million.

He said the figures raise concerns about the ability of Obi to secure the party’s presidential ticket if a primary election were held under current conditions.

“It is not just about wanting Peter Obi to be president; the question is how to deliver him,” Obinna said, stressing the need for mobilization and sustained participation in party processes.

He called on COPDEM members and ADC stakeholders to intensify sensitization efforts, advocate for accountable governance, and prioritize leadership quality in political engagement.

Also speaking at the event, COPDEM’s Abia State chairman, Prince Solomon, alongside a House of Representatives aspirant for the Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency, Ogbonna Abarikwu, urged Nigerians to be more deliberate in rejecting poor leadership and to support credible candidates in future elections.
