Lionel Messi Clinches FIFA Best Men’s Award for Second Consecutive Year
Lionel Messi has secured the prestigious FIFA Best Men’s award, marking his second consecutive win, as he triumphed over contenders Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. The 36-year-old Argentine, who recently clinched the Ballon d’Or for a record-breaking eighth time, once again stands atop the football world.
Captains and coaches of national teams participated in the voting process, where Messi emerged as the clear favorite despite a relatively unremarkable 12 months for the veteran player.
Messi’s stellar performance in guiding Argentina to the 2022 World Cup victory played a pivotal role in his latest achievement. The legendary player orchestrated his nation’s triumph, netting crucial goals in the final, before making a career move to Inter Miami in the MLS.
Since joining David Beckham’s Miami team, Messi has notched up an impressive record, scoring 11 goals in 14 appearances and securing the Leagues Cup with the team.
This accolade marks two consecutive years of Messi being named FIFA’s Best Men’s Player, adding to his previous victories in 2022 and 2019. The FIFA Best awards, introduced eight years ago, have become a significant platform for recognizing global footballing talents, distinct from the renowned Ballon d’Or awards.
Despite Erling Haaland’s outstanding 52-goal season with Manchester City, which saw them secure the Champions League, FA Cup, and Premier League titles, he fell short of surpassing Messi in both the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Best awards.
Kylian Mbappe, nominated as the third contender, showcased another impressive individual campaign for Paris Saint-Germain, contributing to their pursuit of the Champions League, though ultimately falling short.
