LG Polls: APC, APGA, Labour Party Protest Missing Result Sheets in Enugu
Protests erupted on Saturday as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Labour Party (LP) decried the absence of crucial result sheets at polling units across Enugu state during local government elections.
Voting commenced later than scheduled, with the first ballots cast at 10:50 a.m. at Polling Unit 007, Township Primary School 3. Tensions mounted when officials from the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) arrived at polling stations around 9:40 a.m. without the necessary result sheets, essential for the electoral process.
At polling units 008, 020, 003, 002, and 001, located in Christ Church, Enugu South Council, agents from APC and LP refused to proceed with voting until the missing documents were provided. A Labour Party agent, who chose to remain anonymous, stated, “ENSIEC provided other materials, but the result sheets were missing. The Supervisory Presiding Officer claimed she had the results but would only bring them in the afternoon.”
An APC agent echoed this concern, insisting, “There will be no election without result sheets.”
In Awgu Ward Nine, APGA’s acting chairman, Ekene Uzodimma, reported similar frustrations, noting that many polling units had not received election materials by 11 a.m. APGA councillor Okeke Fidelis highlighted that his entire ward was still waiting for materials, and Uche, an APGA collation agent, faced entry denial at the Enugu North Council Area, citing restrictions that favored only PDP agents.
Chukwuemeka Ochi, APGA’s chairmanship candidate in Udi Council Area, also noted the delays in the distribution of election materials. Amid these challenges, a low voter turnout was observed in several polling units in Enugu South Council Area, raising concerns about the electoral process’s integrity.
