LAWMA Operative Dies After Being Struck by Reversing Bus in Lagos
Lagos authorities have confirmed the death of a female operative of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) following a tragic road accident on Meran Road, Iyana Ekoro, Lagos.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the LAWMA staff member was performing routine roadside cleaning when she was hit by a blue Ford commercial bus, registration BDG 495 YH, which was allegedly reversing dangerously on the expressway. The impact, particularly to her head, caused her immediate death.
LASTMA said its officers, who were monitoring traffic nearby, quickly responded to the incident. The bus driver initially fled the scene but was later apprehended by LASTMA operatives and handed over to the Meiran Police Division for investigation and prosecution.
The agency noted that prompt action by its personnel prevented a potential escalation, as an angry crowd had gathered at the scene. LAWMA officials later evacuated the deceased’s body for necessary procedures.
In a statement, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the death as “tragic and avoidable,” expressing condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues, and loved ones. He condemned illegal reversing on expressways as a serious traffic violation under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, and warned motorists against reckless driving.
Bakare-Oki also commended LASTMA officers for their professionalism, noting their role in apprehending the suspect and maintaining order at the scene.
