Lagos Should Have Muslim Governor in 2027 – Methodist Archbishop

The Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Lagos, Most Rev. Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, has advocated for the election of a Muslim governor in Lagos State in 2027, citing the need for religious balance and inclusion in the state’s leadership.

Speaking during the Lagos State House of Assembly’s 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Service, themed “The Voice of Mercy,” Archbishop Olawuyi emphasized that by 2027, Christians would have held the governorship for 12 consecutive years. He called for fairness and religious tolerance, suggesting it was time for a Muslim to take the helm in Lagos.

A statement by Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, quoted the Archbishop as saying, “It would be 12 years in 2027 that we have been in the system together, and we have had Christians as governors. Now, it’s time to give our Muslim brothers a chance to govern us in Lagos State.”

The Archbishop highlighted the tenures of Governors Akinwunmi Ambode and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, both Christians. Ambode served one term from 2015 to 2019, while Sanwo-Olu is on course to complete his maximum two terms by 2027. This Christian-led governance follows the administrations of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, both Muslims, who governed Lagos from 1999 to 2015.
