Lagos Operation Leads to Capture of Rivers Man Wanted by EFCC for ₦50m Fraud

Law enforcement operatives in Rivers State successfully captured Joel MBA Okodi, a long-sought individual on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) wanted list. The operation unfolded in the Ajegunle area of Lagos.

Joel MBA Okodi, popularly known as ‘Chief,’ had been residing at No. 21, Abak Road, Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. He is identified as a Director at Chismo Resources Limited in Ikot-Ekpene.

The arrest stemmed from Okodi’s alleged fraudulent acquisition of ₦50 million from one Chief Okosisi. The victim promptly reported the incident, leading to the EFCC’s involvement in the case.

During the investigation, Okodi enlisted the help of Mr. Ochulor Okeokwu as a surety, submitting property documents valued at ₦50 million as collateral at the EFCC Office in Port Harcourt. However, Okodi evaded investigation, resorting to threats against Okeokwu whenever contacted.

Upon receiving a petition from Mr. Okeokwu, the Inspector General of Police approved and forwarded it to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who took swift action to effect Okodi’s arrest.

In a press statement, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Command’s spokesperson, revealed that the coordinated efforts of Operation Sting led to Okodi’s arrest on January 18, 2024, at approximately 20:34 hrs in Ajegunle, Lagos.

CP Disu emphasized the importance of caution when acting as sureties and warned criminals that there is no sanctuary within the state. The case is now in the hands of the EFCC, showcasing the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in tackling financial crimes.
