Lagos Deploys Speed Limit Monitors, Introduces N50,000 Fine for Violations
The Lagos State government has introduced four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor speeding and improve traffic management across the city. The initiative, a collaboration between the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and Huawei Technologies, aims to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the development during a press briefing on Thursday, explaining that the new system would work alongside existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.
According to Osiyemi, two checkpoint sites have been installed to detect speeding violations. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while the other is at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where the speed limit is set at 60km/h. These locations were strategically chosen to curb excessive speeding, a major cause of road accidents in Lagos.
Additionally, two e-police sites have been installed at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to detect various traffic violations. These sites will monitor offenses such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, non-compliance with lane discipline, and reverse driving on highways.
Osiyemi urged motorists to comply with the new measures, stating that violators would face fines. Running a red light will attract a penalty of N20,000, while exceeding the speed limit will result in a fine of N50,000.
Enforcement is set to begin immediately, with the Vehicle Inspection Service department sending SMS notifications to offenders, detailing their violations and corresponding fines. The commissioner emphasized that the initiative is not meant to be punitive but rather to promote responsible driving, reduce accidents, and create a safer road network in Lagos.
Also present at the briefing were the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, representatives from Huawei Technologies, and senior officials from the transportation ministry.
