Lagos Consumer Agency Issues Warning on Hazardous Plantain Chips

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the consumption of fried plantains, commonly known as “plantain chips,” produced through questionable methods.

The caution comes in response to a viral social media post alleging that a plantain chip seller was observed incorporating polythene into the frying process, raising significant safety concerns.

According to the social media user who raised the alarm, the seller grated approximately five pieces of polythene into the hot oil, claiming it was done to reinforce the chips and prevent breakage.

Expressing disbelief, the post reads, “Out of shock, I asked why she had to melt that into the oil. She told me that it is done to harden the chips so it doesn’t break. Oh my God! I couldn’t believe my ears.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, LASCOPA expressed profound concern over the potential health hazards associated with such practices. The agency urged consumers to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of being vigilant about the source of their plantain chips to avoid exposure to harmful substances and preventable food poisoning.

LASCOPA disclosed an ongoing investigation into the matter and pledged to take appropriate actions to safeguard consumers, holding those responsible for the dangerous practice accountable.

Calling on the public for assistance, LASCOPA encouraged individuals to report unfriendly and unlawful practices among sellers of consumable items that pose risks to consumer health to the appropriate government agencies.

The agency’s statement provided contact information for reporting concerns and seeking assistance: No 2B, Soji Adepegba Close off Allen Avenue Ikeja and annex offices in Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Bariga LCDA, Ikorodu Local Government, and Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA.
