Lagos Assembly Members Meet Tinubu Over Leadership Crisis

The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly remains unresolved following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. In an effort to address the situation, some members of the Assembly have traveled to Abuja for a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

On Monday, February 3, key political figures, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and the Lagos State House of Assembly, gathered at Lagos House Marina to discuss the ongoing tensions. The meeting was attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat, GAC leader Tajudeen Olusi, and other stakeholders. While the agenda was not made public, Obasa’s removal was expected to be a central topic of discussion.

The impeachment of Obasa by 32 lawmakers has led to political unrest in the state. Allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office were cited as reasons for his removal. The situation escalated further when the Department of State Services (DSS) intervened following a petition allegedly filed by Obasa. He claimed his impeachment was politically motivated and involved misconduct within the Assembly.

On January 30, the DSS detained several lawmakers for questioning, holding them for about six hours before their release later that day.
