Lagos Assembly Crisis Nears Resolution as Meranda Prepares to Step Down as House Reconvenes
The ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly appears to be nearing resolution as Speaker Mojisola Meranda is set to step down. Her resignation is expected to clear the way for the reinstatement of impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who, according to sources, will also resign shortly to facilitate the emergence of a new Speaker.
The decision follows a crucial meeting on Sunday night at Lagos House Marina, attended by members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and lawmakers. Sources indicate that the resolutions from the meeting may be implemented today, Monday, as the House resumes plenary.
The Meranda-led Assembly has scheduled a plenary session for 1 p.m., where her resignation is likely to be announced. According to an insider, the meeting provided a platform for open discussions, allowing all parties to express their concerns. In the end, a compromise was reached to resolve the deadlock and allow legislative activities to resume.
