Labour Party Factions Clash in Awka
A leadership dispute within the Labour Party’s Anambra State chapter has led to a dramatic standoff at a recent event in Awka, the state capital.
Tensions flared as two factions of the party clashed over control of the state leadership, culminating in a near-physical confrontation. The situation was defused thanks to the prompt intervention of a representative from the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, who stepped in to mediate.
The conflict arose from ongoing disagreements about the formation of a Caretaker Committee for the state chapter. A brief meeting between the two factions and Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Item resulted in the cancellation of the stakeholders’ event. Both groups later addressed journalists separately.
