Labour Leader Allegedly Abducted by Police in Nasarawa: NUEE Raises Alarm Over Safety

Eleojo Opaluwa, a key official of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kogi State, has reportedly been abducted by operatives of the Nigeria Police.

According to sources, the incident occurred on August 4, 2024, when Opaluwa received a phone call and abruptly left his family in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, to meet with an unidentified caller. Eyewitnesses later confirmed that he was forcefully taken away by security personnel in a Hilux and a Golf vehicle.

Later that day, at approximately 5 p.m., security personnel in a Toyota SUV visited the NUEE office in Area 8, Garki, Abuja, to inquire about Opaluwa’s whereabouts. Despite the security operatives’ inquiries, Opaluwa has remained incommunicado since his abduction, leaving his family in distress.

The family initially reported him missing to the Mararaba Police Station, but despite their efforts, the police have yet to declare him officially missing. As of now, the family has followed all the necessary procedures, providing photographs and other details to assist in the search.

In response to the incident, NUEE, through its acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, confirmed Opaluwa’s disappearance and expressed grave concerns about his safety. The union has reached out to their legal team and the National Security Adviser to the President, seeking urgent intervention.

“We were reliably informed that Opaluwa was taken by security personnel and has not been seen or heard from since. We demand his immediate release, as his continued detention is a blatant violation of his rights as a Nigerian citizen,” Igwebike stated.
