Kidnapped Seminarian Dies in Captivity as Five Villagers Abducted in Separate Incident
A seminarian abducted in July from the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, has died in captivity, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi confirmed on Wednesday.
In a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, Assistant Director of Communications, the diocese identified the deceased as Emmanuel Alabi. Another abducted seminarian, Joshua Aleobua, was released on November 4, while Japhet Jesse, the third victim, had earlier regained his freedom.
“The Diocese regrets to announce the death of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who did not survive the conditions of his abduction,” the statement read. “We thank God for the safe return of Joshua Aleobua and Japhet Jesse, and we continue to pray for Emmanuel’s repose.”
Bishop **Gabriel Dunia** of the Auchi Diocese expressed grief over Alabi’s death and urged security agencies to strengthen protection for citizens in rural communities. He also appealed to public officials to address insecurity as a matter of urgency rather than a campaign issue ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a separate incident, **five residents of Iviankpodi**—three men and two women—were kidnapped on their way to their farms last Saturday. A community member told reporters that the abductors have demanded **₦50 million** for their release.
“One of those taken is my neighbour. They were seized on their way to the farm, and the kidnappers are demanding ₦50 million,” the resident said.
The latest abductions have heightened concern in Etsako East, where residents say criminal activity has made daily life increasingly unsafe. Community leaders are calling for visible security patrols and stronger government response to prevent further attacks.
