Kidnapped Imo Priest Regains Freedom, Catholic Church Confirms
The Catholic Church in Owerri has confirmed the release of Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, the Parish Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Izombe, who was abducted on March 23.
In a statement issued early Thursday, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbara, Chancellor of the Owerri Archdiocese, announced that Fr. Ubaechu was freed on Wednesday, March 26.
The priest was kidnapped in Ejemekuru while traveling to Owerri for the annual retreat of the Owerri Archdiocesan clergy. Reports indicate that his abductors had demanded a ₦20 million ransom, though the church did not disclose whether any payment was made.
“We thank God for His infinite mercy and for answering our prayers. We appreciate your fraternal solidarity and prayers. To God be the glory,” Fr. Mbara stated.
The release of Fr. Ubaechu has brought relief to the Catholic community in Imo State, where concerns over rising insecurity and kidnappings remain high. Authorities have yet to provide details on the circumstances surrounding his freedom.
