Katsina State Defends School Closures During Ramadan, Cites Weather, Fasting Challenges

The Katsina State Government has defended its decision to close schools during the holy month of Ramadan, emphasizing that necessary measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to students’ education.

In a statement on Tuesday, the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through its Public Relations Officer, Sani Danjuma, explained that the decision aimed to balance religious observance with academic continuity. The government acknowledged concerns about school closures but assured the public that a strategic plan was in place to support students during this period.

The ministry cited extreme weather conditions in northern Nigeria and the challenges of fasting as key factors influencing the decision. Officials also reminded the public of an existing state law mandating school closures during Ramadan. Addressing concerns from various stakeholders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the ministry reassured that extra lessons, set to begin on March 3, 2025, would be structured to accommodate both students and teachers observing Ramadan while also considering environmental conditions.
