Kano State Tops 2025 NECO Performance Chart
Kano State has claimed the top spot in the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for internal candidates, marking a landmark victory for the state’s education sector.
The NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing in Minna, Niger State.
According to the results, Kano State recorded 68,159 candidates (5.02% of the national total) who secured five credits or more—including English Language and Mathematics—putting the state ahead of all others in this year’s performance index.
This historic outcome follows a wave of reforms and investments in education introduced by Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
Nationwide, a total of 1,358,339 candidates sat for the June/July 2025 exams. Of this number, 818,492 students (60.26%) passed with five credits including Mathematics and English, while 1,144,496 candidates (84.26%) passed with five credits or more in any subject.
Trailing Kano in the performance chart, Lagos State secured second place with 67,0y07 successful candidates, while Oyo State came third with 48,742.
Reacting to the achievement, Governor Yusuf, in a statement through his spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described the success as a reflection of his administration’s educational vision.
“I am elated by this outstanding performance. It is a testament to the fact that when we prioritize education, invest in our teachers, and ensure access to quality learning, the results speak for themselves. This success belongs to every teacher, student, and parent who has supported our reforms,” Governor Yusuf said.
Education experts have also hailed Kano’s milestone. **Dr. Amina Lawal**, a Kano-based analyst, noted that the results highlight the impact of deliberate investment in education.
“Kano’s success in the NECO exams is a clear demonstration of the power of visionary leadership and sustained investment in education. The state has set a new benchmark for other regions to follow,” she said.
With this achievement, Kano State has not only secured bragging rights as the nation’s best-performing state but also raised the bar for educational excellence in Nigeria.
