JUST IN: Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with $100,000, Flats, and National Honour After AfroBasket Triumph
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with $100,000 each, a furnished flat for every player, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), following their historic win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The rewards were announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a special reception held Monday evening at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja. Members of the team’s coaching and technical staff also received $50,000 each, a three-bedroom flat, and the OON honour.
The reception was attended by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Wife of the Vice President Hajiya Nana Shettima, and Chief of Staff to the President Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who joined the Vice President in receiving the team on behalf of the President.
In his remarks, Vice President Shettima praised the players for their dedication, describing their victory as a symbol of Nigeria’s unity and excellence. “You have brought great pride to Nigeria. Your excellence on the court has once again put our nation on the global map for sporting greatness,” he said.
D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title—and seventh overall—by defeating Mali 78–64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The win continued their dominance in African women’s basketball and extended an unbeaten run that began in 2017.
The event drew several top government officials, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Youths and Sports Development, Senator Garba Maidoki, and Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadou.
The celebration of D’Tigress follows a similar state reception hosted by President Tinubu last week for the Super Falcons, after their tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) victory in Morocco.
