JUST IN: Tinubu Extends Tenure of Customs Comptroller-General Adeniyi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an extension of tenure for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. Initially due to conclude on August 31, 2025, Mr. Adeniyi will now continue in office following the president’s directive.

The extension was announced on Thursday in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. It is aimed at allowing Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete major initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Among the key projects cited are the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, full deployment of the National Single Window Project, and implementation of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

President Tinubu, the statement noted, commended Mr. Adeniyi’s leadership and dedication, expressing confidence that the extended tenure will further strengthen the Customs Service in critical areas such as trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.

Appointed in 2023, Mr. Adeniyi has led several reform-driven efforts focused on increasing transparency, improving operational efficiency, and aligning the agency with global trade standards.

The Nigeria Customs Service plays a central role in the nation’s economic structure, serving as a key instrument for revenue collection and border management. As AfCFTA enters a decisive phase of implementation, the administration’s move signals a strong commitment to enhancing digital systems, trade integration, and cross-border coordination.
