JUST IN: PDP Postpones Screening of Aspirants for 2025 National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, the party cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the delay. Fintiri assured that a new date for the screening would be announced soon, expressing regret over any inconvenience caused by the postponement.

“The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. A new date will be communicated once fixed. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement read.

Fintiri reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to conducting a transparent and credible national convention. The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention is scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.

The party had earlier announced a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee on October 25, chaired by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN. The committee was set to vet aspirants for various national positions ahead of the convention.

The postponement came shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman. His declaration followed reports that northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the seat.

However, the endorsement sparked disagreement within the party, with factions loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, opposing the move over claims of inadequate consultation. The controversy adds to growing internal tension within the PDP, which has recently faced a series of high-profile resignations.
