JUST IN: PDP Appoints Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as Acting National Chairman

In the wake of the suspension of Ambassador Illiya Damagum, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the party’s new Acting National Chairman. This decision was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

The NWC’s statement emphasized that the appointment of Yayari Ahmed Mohammed “takes immediate effect” and is in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017). The move follows the suspension of Damagum, who, along with the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, was sanctioned for alleged disloyalty and referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.

The statement reads: “Following the suspension of His Excellency, Amb. Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman.”

The PDP leadership urged party members to maintain focus during this turbulent period, especially as preparations are underway for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. The NWC called on “all Organs, leaders, critical stakeholders, and members of our great Party to remain focused at this critical time.”

The NEC meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024, and is expected to address key issues surrounding the party’s leadership crisis and the way forward.
