JUST IN: Okonjo-Iweala Reappointed WTO Director-General for Second Term

 

 

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term. The decision was made during a special General Council meeting today, where WTO members unanimously approved her reappointment.

 

Her second term, which will span four years, is set to begin on 1st September 2025. Okonjo-Iweala first assumed the role of WTO Director-General in March 2021, becoming the first African and the first woman to lead the global trade body.

 

The reappointment follows widespread support for her leadership, with 58 WTO member countries endorsing a proposal from the African Group of WTO to extend her tenure.
