JUST IN: Multiple Abductions Reported as Gunmen Attack Oba Community in Anambra
In a fresh wave of violence, a yet-to-be-confirmed number of people have been reportedly kidnapped by gunmen in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State. The abductions, which allegedly occurred late on Monday, September 16, took place near Agip Junction, just hours after a separate attack on a police station in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area.
Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but a video circulating on social media shows abandoned vehicles believed to belong to the victims. Eyewitnesses in the video recount the events, with one individual describing how the attackers first abducted a person in a Toyota vehicle before stopping two other cars and taking their occupants. The gunmen reportedly fled the scene after security operatives intervened with gunfire, but not before escaping with the hostages.
The Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that he had no information regarding the incident at the time of inquiry. He speculated, however, that the reported abductions may not have occurred recently and promised to investigate further.
This is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Oba. Earlier this month, unidentified gunmen attacked the Divisional Police Headquarters in the area, killing a police corporal on duty. Additionally, in July 2023, the renowned native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, also known as Akwa Ọkụkọ Tiwara Akị, was kidnapped from his hotel in Oba, although he was later released unharmed.
