JUST IN: Lagos Assembly Backs Speaker Meranda with Vote of Confidence, Adjourns Indefinitely
The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed a tense session on Monday as Speaker Mojisola Meranda presided over plenary amid heightened security and intervention by the Department of State Services (DSS). The sitting, held under unusual circumstances, followed the DSS’s earlier sealing of the chamber and the Speaker’s office in the morning.
Drama unfolded when DSS officials were seen inside the chamber, engaging in a physical confrontation with legislative workers at the exit door. However, lawmakers, backed by assembly workers, forced their way into the chamber around 12:30 pm, eventually overpowering the DSS officials and resuming proceedings.
Amid speculation regarding Meranda’s position, members of the assembly passed a vote of confidence in her leadership. The motion was moved by Oladipo Ajomale, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, reinforcing the assembly’s trust in Meranda. Following this decision, the plenary was adjourned indefinitely.
