JUST IN: Labour Rejects FG’s N54,000 New Minimum Wage Proposal
In a decisive move, Organised Labour has rejected the Federal Government’s latest proposal of N54,000 as the new minimum wage. The announcement came on Tuesday following a recent meeting between the two parties.
The Federal Government had initially offered N48,000, which was met with strong opposition from Labour. The revised proposal of N54,000, though an improvement, still fell short of Labour’s expectations. A leader from the Organised Labour, in a telephone conversation with Vanguard, confirmed the rejection.
Previously, representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) walked out on the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage over the proposed N48,000. Their stance remained firm as they urged the government to dismiss any consideration of a N100,000 minimum wage.
Organised Labour has been adamant about the need for serious negotiations regarding workers’ wages, advocating for a minimum wage of N615,000. This figure, they argue, is based on the lowest minimum necessary for workers to maintain a decent standard of living.
