JUST IN: Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, Released Following Police Arrest

The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, who was apprehended by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Arungwa Nwazule on Wednesday evening in Benin City, Edo State, has been released. It was learned that Abure regained his freedom around 3:05 am on Thursday.

The AIG had earlier disclosed that Abure, along with the Edo State chairman, Kelly Ogbaloi, and three others, were arrested on charges ranging from conspiracy, brutal assault, attempted murder, armed robbery, grievous harm to conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Speaking to his supporters after his release, Abure likened his ordeal to the challenges faced by freedom fighters globally. He acknowledged that his release came after pressure from unspecified quarters, assuring that others arrested with him would be released in the early hours of Thursday.

Abure took the opportunity to criticize the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of making life unbearable for Nigerians since the 2023 general elections. He highlighted the continuous efforts to instigate crises within the LP through frivolous accusations and petitions.

The LP National Chairman vowed not to be deterred from pursuing the party’s goals, emphasizing that the struggle for the people’s emancipation must continue. In a video released, Abure expressed gratitude for the support and solidarity received, stating that the challenges faced were reminiscent of those encountered by freedom fighters worldwide.

He concluded by pointing out the deteriorating state of the country under the APC’s rule, citing economic challenges such as the high exchange rate of the dollar, soaring fuel prices, inflation, and unemployment. Abure urged Nigerians to stand up for their rights, emphasizing that the use of power matters more than its acquisition.

The situation is still unfolding, with expectations high for the release of the other detained party members in the early hours of Thursday.
