JUST IN: Kano Hit by Bird Flu Outbreak: Federal Government Issues Warning

The Federal Government has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in Kano State. The outbreak has affected several bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys, raising concerns about its potential spread to other regions.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Dr. Taiwo Olasoju on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, the government highlighted the heightened risk of the disease spreading during this season. It urged state veterinary offices and relevant agencies to intensify surveillance efforts and implement stringent biosecurity measures to contain the virus.

The circular emphasized the need for preventive measures and called for collaboration among stakeholders to mitigate the risk of the outbreak expanding to neighboring states. Public awareness campaigns and close monitoring of poultry populations were also recommended to detect and address new cases swiftly.

Providing more details, the Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kano State chapter, Dr. Usman Gwarzo, recounted the origins of the outbreak. He explained that in December 2024, a resident of Galadanchi quarters in Gwale Local Government Area purchased a duck from Janguza market in Tofa Local Government Area. The duck later died, followed by the deaths of chickens in the same flock. Suspecting avian influenza, the carcasses were taken to the Gwale Veterinary Clinic, and subsequent testing in January 2025 confirmed the presence of the virus.

Fortunately, no cases have been reported from commercial poultry farms, providing some relief to the industry. However, experts have urged poultry handlers to prioritize biosecurity by disinfecting equipment, restricting farm access, and ensuring proper disposal of infected birds to prevent further spread.

Bird flu outbreaks remain a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s poultry industry, often causing significant economic losses.
