JUST-IN: Kano High Court Bars Aminu Ado Bayero from Parading as Emir

A Kano State High Court has issued a permanent injunction preventing Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, and four other dethroned emirs from presenting themselves as traditional rulers.

Presiding over the case, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu ruled that Bayero and the former emirs of the defunct Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye Emirates can no longer claim or exercise any emirate powers. The case, initiated by the Kano State government on May 27, 2024, sought to stop these figures from parading themselves as traditional rulers.

The respondents in the case include Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero (15th Emir of Kano), Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero (2nd Emir of Bichi), Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II (Emir of Karaye), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa (Emir of Rano), and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim-Gaya (Emir of Gaya). The Inspector General of Police, the Director of the State Security Service in Kano, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigeria Army were also named as respondents.

This legal battle began after the Kano State government, under the previous administration of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, dethroned the five emirs. The decision to dissolve the emirates has sparked significant debate and controversy in the state.

The deposed Emir Bayero has been residing in the Nasarawa mini palace in Kano, while the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, resides in the main Emir’s palace. Both have continued to assert their claims to the traditional leadership of Kano.
