JUST IN: Justice Egwuatu Steps Down from Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Case After Accusation by Akpabio

Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has recused himself from the case involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central District. The decision came after Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the third defendant in the case, accused the judge of bias.

During Tuesday’s court session, Justice Egwuatu announced his withdrawal, stating that the allegation of bias from Akpabio had necessitated his decision. As a result, the case file will be forwarded to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, for reassignment to another judge.

The legal battle stems from a dispute between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio over a seat arrangement in the Senate chamber. The senator had earlier accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office, which escalated tensions between them. Following the dispute, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing misconduct.

Before stepping down, Justice Egwuatu had granted an ex-parte order preventing the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from proceeding with disciplinary actions against Akpoti-Uduaghan. The senator had asked the court to halt the committee’s investigation into the matter.

The controversy has sparked reactions from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters, some of whom have petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for her recall. Meanwhile, the senator has maintained her stance, denying any claims of apologizing to the Senate and asserting that she will not be intimidated.
