JUST IN: Journalist Fisayo Soyombo Released by Nigerian Army After Three Days in Detention
Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been released from detention by the Nigerian Army. The journalist’s release followed three days of detention by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
FIJ initially reported on Friday that Soyombo had been detained by the military, with authorities claiming he was arrested at an illegal oil bunkering site. The organization strongly refuted this narrative.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), FIJ confirmed Soyombo’s release. The post thanked supporters for their advocacy and criticized the Army’s characterization of the journalist’s activities.
“We can confirm that our founder, @fisayosoyombo, has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted,” FIJ wrote.
The organization expressed concern over the Army’s portrayal of Soyombo’s work, describing it as a “deliberate mischaracterisation” aimed at linking him to illegal oil bunkering. FIJ assured that it would address the Army’s claims.
FIJ also highlighted safety concerns for Soyombo, given the extensive information shared with the military during his detention. They are currently assessing the situation to ensure his safety remains uncompromised.
