JUST IN: JAMB Admits Fault, Orders UTME Resit for 379,997 Candidates as Registrar Weeps
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that 379,997 candidates will retake the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) following widespread technical issues and irregularities. The registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, was visibly emotional during a press conference held on Wednesday, where he tearfully accepted full responsibility for the failures that marred the examination process.
Prof. Oloyede acknowledged the distress experienced by candidates and their families due to the challenges, including technical glitches and unusually low scores. He attributed the situation to internal lapses and negligence on the part of JAMB staff. In a move to address the fallout, he confirmed that candidates from 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres across the Owerri Zone—covering all five southeastern states—would be required to sit for the exam again.
The registrar’s emotional response underscored the gravity of the situation, as he repeatedly wiped tears from his face while expressing regret over the incident. He assured the public that corrective measures were being taken to ensure such failures do not recur.
