JUST IN: INEC Rejects Petition to Recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District. In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission stated that the petition did not fulfill the constitutional requirements necessary for the recall of a senator in Nigeria.
Earlier this week, INEC received the petition from constituents of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan at its headquarters in Abuja. The submission was made by a delegation and officially received by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony. The petition, titled Constituents’ Petition for the Recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Grounds of Loss of Confidence, claimed to have gathered over 250,000 signatures from the district’s approximately 480,000 registered voters.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently serving a suspension from the Senate for allegedly violating parliamentary rules. Despite this, INEC has ruled that the petition does not meet the requirements set out in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), effectively halting the recall process.
