JUST IN: IGP Egbetokun Orders Raids on Vulcaniser Shops to Seize Tyres Ahead of #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protest

In a move to preempt disruptions during the planned #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police has mandated raids on vulcaniser shops across the country. This operation aims to confiscate unused tyres to prevent protesters from using them to ignite fires on highways and other critical locations.

The directive comes as the nation braces for widespread demonstrations against worsening hunger and misgovernance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. State police commands have been instructed to carry out these raids and ensure the disposal of the seized tyres.

A leaked police communication, published by Sahara Reporters, revealed stringent warnings to Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in Ekiti State. The message, addressed to the Commissioner of Police, detailed that DPOs would face sanctions if tyre fires occurred within their jurisdictions. However, the specific nature of these sanctions was not disclosed.

The wireless message, dated July 24, 2024, and addressed to various police units, stated:

“In view of the Inspector General of Police’s conference with Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police, the Commissioner of Police directs you to raid vulcaniser shops in your areas during the night, seize all unused tyres, and dispose of them to prevent protesters from setting fires on the highways. Any DPO in whose area tyre fires occur will be sanctioned accordingly. Strict compliance is required.”
