JUST IN: Ibas Bows Out, Hands Over to Reinstated Rivers Governor Fubara
Rivers State witnessed a major political transition today as Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, Sole Administrator of the state, formally handed over power to reinstated Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In a farewell broadcast, Ibas called on the people to give their full support to Fubara as he resumes his mandate.
President Bola Tinubu had suspended Fubara six months ago while declaring emergency rule in the state, appointing Ibas to oversee governance. On Monday, Tinubu lifted the emergency rule and restored Fubara to office.
Addressing Rivers citizens for the last time in his role, Ibas expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve during what he described as an extraordinary moment in the state’s history. He highlighted key achievements under his administration, including the restoration of law and order, conduct of local government elections, reconstitution of statutory boards and commissions, and the passage of the state budget by the National Assembly.
He warned against the dangers of unchecked power and political rivalry without dialogue, noting that such practices could cripple institutions and undermine democracy. Reflecting on his tenure, Ibas paid tribute to civil servants, statesmen, and the people of Rivers State for their resilience and support.
Handing over to Fubara, Ibas said he was confident in the governor’s leadership and urged citizens to stand firmly behind him. “No matter how competent and clear a vision may be, it can only thrive with the active support of citizens,” he said, adding that this handover marked the close of another chapter in his life devoted to service in the military, diplomacy, and governance.
