JUST IN: Explosion Rocks APC Secretariat in Rivers State Just Hours Before LG Polls
Tension escalated in Rivers State on Saturday morning after an explosion rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat in Port Harcourt. The incident occurred just hours before local government elections were set to take place across the state.
The explosion, suspected to have been caused by dynamites, severely damaged the main gate, security house, and parts of an adjoining building at the APC office. Videos circulating on social media captured the aftermath of the attack, with debris scattered across the area.
Chief Tony Okocha, chairman of a faction of the APC loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, pointed fingers at supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the attack. In a message sent to journalists, Okocha alleged that “pro-Fubara civilian soldiers” were behind the explosion and an attempt to set the building on fire, which was quickly extinguished by security personnel at the scene.
The APC faction led by Okocha had previously announced its decision to boycott the local government polls. However, the faction recognized by the court, led by Chief Emeka Beke, is participating in the election and has fielded candidates.
