JUST IN: DSS Launches Directorate of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Appoints Afunanya as Director
In a move aimed at enhancing transparency, democratic governance, and public engagement, the Department of State Services (DSS) has unveiled its new Directorate of Public Relations and Strategic Communications (DPRSC). The appointment of Dr. Peter Nnochirionye Afunanya as the pioneer Director of the DPRSC marks a significant step in this innovative initiative.
The announcement was made public on the 27th of September, 2023, by the DSS National Headquarters in Abuja. Dr. Afunanya, who previously served as the Public Relations Officer, brings to this crucial role over two decades of extensive experience in various aspects of security and intelligence.
His impressive qualifications include a Ph.D. in Security and Strategic Studies from Nasarawa State University, a Master’s degree in Peace and Strategic Studies from the University of Ilorin, and a Master of Arts degree in English Language from the University of Uyo. His academic journey began with a Second Class Upper Division in English Language from Abia State University, Uturu.
Dr. Afunanya’s dedication to service and excellence has earned him numerous accolades, including the President’s NYSC National Honours Award for Outstanding Performance during his service year in 1998/1999. He has also undertaken specialized training both locally and internationally, including programs at Harvard University, City University London, and courses in counterterrorism and strategic communication in Switzerland.
Throughout his career at the DSS, Dr. Afunanya has held various critical positions within the organization, with his most recent role being the Public Relations Officer. His contributions extend beyond the DSS, as he has served on the Board of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Sub Committee of the Presidential Transition Council. Currently, he is a member of the Strategic Communication Inter-Agency Policy and Coordination Committee (SC/IPCC) in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
Dr. Afunanya’s commitment to professional development is reflected in his memberships in several prestigious organizations, including the Security Institute (FSI), Society for Peace Scholars and Practice (SPSP), Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NiCarb), and the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), among others.
Notably, he received the DGSS Meritorious Award in 2021, a testament to his outstanding service. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Afunanya is a dedicated community worker, photographer, and enjoys hobbies like golf, volleyball, storytelling, and writing poetry and short stories.
The establishment of the Directorate of Public Relations and Strategic Communications signifies the DSS’s commitment to fostering open communication, transparency, and democratic principles. Dr. Afunanya’s appointment as its pioneer Director is expected to reinforce the organization’s engagement with the public and stakeholders, making the DSS more accessible and accountable to the Nigerian people.
