JUST IN: Court Dismisses Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail Request, Orders Continued Detention
Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the latest bail request of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu sought the restoration of his revoked bail and his transfer from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to either house arrest or prison custody.
Justice Nyako ruled against the request, citing a previous finding that Kanu had violated the conditions of his earlier bail by fleeing the country. She also noted that the sureties for Kanu’s initial bail had been discharged due to their inability to locate him.
In her ruling, Justice Nyako advised that Kanu should take his case to the Court of Appeal to exercise his right to challenge the decision. She dismissed claims from Kanu’s lead counsel that the Supreme Court had stated his bail should not have been revoked, clarifying that she found no such assertion in the Supreme Court’s judgment.
Kanu has remained defiant, refusing to stand trial before any Nigerian court. He insists that any attempt to try him would violate Nigeria’s Constitution and international laws.
