JUST IN: CAF Awards Nigeria Three Points, Fines Libya $50,000 Over Forfeited Match
In a decisive ruling, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria’s Super Eagles three points and imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libyan Football Federation, following the forfeiture of a recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match.
CAF’s statement, signed by Disciplinary Board Chairperson Ousmane Kane, detailed that Libya violated Article 31 of the AFCON regulations alongside Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. As a result, Nigeria has been granted a 3-0 victory by forfeit for Match No. 87, originally scheduled to take place in Benghazi on October 15, 2024.
The match’s cancellation and Libya’s subsequent penalty come amid heightened scrutiny over the conduct of the Libyan Football Federation. This decision provides a boost to Nigeria’s standings in the qualifiers for AFCON 2025.
