AFCON: CAF Bans Samuel Eto’o, Fines Him $20,000 Over Conduct During Cameroon’s Loss to Morocco
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) president Samuel Eto’o a four-match ban and a fine of 20,000 U.S. dollars following his conduct during Cameroon’s quarterfinal defeat to Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF’s decision is linked to Eto’o’s reaction to officiating during the match, where he was reportedly seen making an angry gesture in protest of refereeing decisions in the presence of CAF President Patrice Motsepe. The match was also marked by heated moments, with players from both teams involved in physical confrontations.
On Sunday, CAF announced that it had opened investigations into violent incidents that occurred during several AFCON matches, including the Cameroon–Morocco encounter.
FECAFOOT confirmed the sanctions in a statement issued on Wednesday night but expressed strong reservations about the ruling. The federation said the decision lacked explicit justification and criticized the disciplinary process, describing it as rushed and not in line with the standards of a fair hearing.
The federation added that Samuel Eto’o would pursue an appeal within the timeframes and procedures set out in CAF regulations. FECAFOOT reiterated its full support for its president and reaffirmed its commitment to justice and fair sporting discipline.
Meanwhile, tournament hosts Morocco are set to face Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
