JUST IN: Buhari’s Ally Archbishop Welby Forced Out of Church of England
Archbishop Justin Welby, a close ally of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, has resigned as the Archbishop of Canterbury. The prominent Anglican leader’s departure comes amid intense criticism over his handling of abuse allegations dating back several decades.
Welby, who has served as the spiritual head of the global Anglican Communion, which represents approximately 85 million members worldwide, announced his resignation on Tuesday. In a statement, he expressed “sorrow” for failing to ensure a comprehensive investigation into abuse allegations involving a volunteer at Christian youth camps in the past.
“Having sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King, I have decided to resign as Archbishop of Canterbury,” Welby stated. “I hope this decision makes clear how seriously the Church of England understands the need for change and our profound commitment to creating a safer church. As I step down, I do so in sorrow with all victims and survivors of abuse.”
This decision follows a recent report revealing that the Church of England failed to address accusations of abuse by one of its volunteers, who was described in the report as potentially the church’s “most prolific serial abuser.” Archbishop Welby had faced increasing calls to step down in light of these findings, as the church comes under pressure to improve its response to safeguarding concerns.
