JUST IN: Boko Haram Overruns Another Military Base, Kills Commanding Officer
A commanding officer has been killed after Boko Haram insurgents attacked and overran a military base in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources said the assault occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Monday when the insurgents stormed the town and launched a coordinated attack on the military camp.
According to a resident familiar with the incident, the attackers approached from several directions before targeting the base.
A security source confirmed that the insurgents forced troops out of the facility during the assault. Military vehicles were set on fire and ammunition was taken from the camp.
The source also confirmed the death of the base’s commanding officer during the attack. The number of additional casualties has not been disclosed.
The latest incident follows an earlier attempt by insurgents to seize the same base last month. Troops repelled that attack and reportedly killed several militants. The response drew praise from residents, with the commanding officer receiving recognition locally and on social media.
The member representing Kukawa in the Borno State House of Assembly, Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, had previously visited the troops to commend their efforts after the earlier attack.
Reacting to Monday’s incident, the lawmaker described the development as tragic, noting that the base had now been overrun.
The attack comes days after insurgents struck another military base and an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Ngoshe town, located in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. That assault left an unspecified number of soldiers and civilians dead.
