JUST IN: Anambra Assembly Suspends Lawmaker Over Social Media Posts
The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Hon. Bernard Udemezue, representing Ayamelum Constituency, for three months over what it described as “damaging content” he shared on social media.
Udemezue, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, had taken to his social media pages to allege that Ayamelum was being marginalised in the distribution of constituency allowances. His post quickly attracted attention, sparking criticism within the Assembly.
Last week, during plenary, the matter was raised as a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Tony Muobike of Aguata II Constituency, and seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Jude Ngobili of Ihiala I Constituency. Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze then referred the issue to the Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges for investigation.
The committee presented its report today, leading the House to resolve that Udemezue be suspended for three months. The decision marks the latest turn in a growing controversy surrounding the lawmaker, who in recent weeks has also drawn public attention for making disclosures about constituency funds and raising questions over the circumstances surrounding the death of his colleague, the late Justice Azuka.
