“Judges Did Not Sing ‘On Your Mandate’ Song; They Stood in Respect for the President” — NJI
The National Judicial Institute (NJI) has dismissed claims that judges sang “On Your Mandate We Shall Stand” during the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference in Abuja.
A video circulating on social media showed judges standing as the tune played while President Bola Tinubu approached the podium, prompting allegations of political endorsement.
In a statement on Wednesday, the NJI clarified that the only song collectively rendered at the ceremony was the national anthem, performed at both the beginning and end of the event. The brief playing of “On Your Mandate” was performed solely by the Guards Brigade band as part of their ceremonial duties.
Judges stood as a mark of respect for the office of the president, the NJI emphasized, not as a political gesture. The institute reaffirmed that the judiciary remains strictly non-partisan and committed to constitutional neutrality.
